How far are you on the journey towards leadership success? Dr Bill Price is a world class executive coach who specialises in neuroscience-based leadership growth. In this post he identifies several factors that will help you become more successful as a leader. Over and above that, and his clever use of alliteration, Dr Bill asks the right questions that will help you on your leadership journey.
1. Patterns
Successful leadership largely rests on having the right patterns in place. Just like daily health and exercise routines, they are essential to keep you on track, helping you to avoid procrastination and making excuses. What are you trying to put off right now and what patterns could be beneficial to your future leadership success?
2. Problems
To be a successful leader, one needs to be a problem solver. In keeping with our ‘P’ theme, Problems tend to be in the Past, causing you Pain, or in the Present requiring Perspective. Where are you vulnerable right now? What is holding you back? What are you afraid of? Answering questions like these will help you unlock your problem-solving abilities.
3. Perspective
Successful leadership stems from having the right perspective. What perceptions do you have? Are they accurate or inaccurate? Helpful or unhelpful? Perhaps you think everything is running well when the opposite is true. Or maybe you think things are worse than they really are. How can you overcome self-limiting thoughts. How do others see you? Is there positive external perspective you can draw on?
4. Prosperity
A successful leader is one who has the ability to create wealth. How does money come into your organisation? How can you create other forms of income? For example, new products? What ideas do you have that could develop a new income stream? Or to ask the question in a different way, what things are you blind to with regards to the possibility of new income? One needs to be completely unemotional when it comes to money, but what are you doing to generate prosperity in your organisation?
5. Principles
A successful leader is aligned to their principles and values. What are the principles you live by? What values do you focus on. Are they in line with each other? Do you live out what you say and speak out from the way you live? Principles are like gravity. They keep you grounded, bringing balance to your life and making your life and leadership role less complicated.
6. Purpose
Having a sense of purpose is essential to leadership success. Again in keeping with our P theme, we have a number of complimentary Ps – Knowing your purpose unleashes Possibilities, Pathway, Potential. Your purpose is your identity in action. How well is it defined in your life? What is the purpose of your life and how are you fulfilling it in the generation you were born into?
Do you have a personal mission statement that gives you ongoing clarity? Having Purpose enables you to experience a greater sense of meaning in life. This is because it connects you to Possibilities, ensures you walk in your Pathway and reach your Potential. Rather than performing, you will be living your purpose and fulfilling it in power.
7. Peace
Successful leaders find peace of mind and enjoyment in what they do. Being at peace doesn’t mean there isn’t turmoil in your life. However, deep inside you are able to cope with the challenges, heartache or noise. Are you experiencing peace in your life? How happy satisfied and content are you right now? Do you enjoy life? Many find stillness through spirituality or periods of solitude, what can you do to bring calm into your life?
Be a successful leader!
How are you doing in terms of the patterns, problems, perspective, prosperity, principles, purpose and peace? Coaching can help you develop these 7 Ps of Successful Leadership.
If you pay attention to these seven things, you will become a better leader. They will empower you to lead from within, be who you say you are, with actions that are transparent and authentic.
